EIA JOINS CALL FOR PERMANENT PROTECTIONS FOR BRISTOL BAY AFTER ARMY CORPS DENIAL OF PEBBLE MINE PERMIT
Washington, DC – Today the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied Northern Dynasty Mineral’s Clean Water Act 404 permit for the Pebble Mine, a massive gold and copper mine proposed for the headwaters of Bristol Bay Alaska. EIA’s Wildlife Team Lead and Counsel, Danielle Grabiel, said:
“The Army Corps made the right decision today for the people, wildlife and ecosystems of Bristol Bay. Northern Dynasty’s application was flawed from the start and rejecting it was the only sensible decision in light of the facts and the unacceptable risks the project posed to communities and the environment. Local Bristol Bay groups have fought the Pebble Project for way too long and I hope they are all taking a collective deep breath this morning. However, we recognize that the fight to protect their home from damaging mining proposals is not over and we join their call for permanent protections for the region.”
