EIA, others send letter to Prime Minister of Romania on forest sector transparency
On October 12, EIA and the World Wide Fund for Nature and Greenpeace submitted a letter to the Prime Minister of Romania Dacian Ciolos, requesting transparent public access to key forest sector data within the country.
Romania is home to Europe's last remaining old growth forests. These forests provide habitat to the continent's largest populations of bears, wolves, lynx, and wild cats. However, these forests are being destroyed by illegal logging. Undercover EIA investigations revealed that Austrian-based timber company Holzindustrie Schweighofer, which dominates the Romanian market for softwoods, is at the root of the crisis.
