RENEGADE WHALING: Iceland’s Creation of an Endangered Species Trade
The Icelandic whaling company Hvalur hf has killed 273 endangered fin whales, and exported more than 1,200 tonnes of fin whale meat and blubber to Japan since 2008. These shipments, worth an estimated US $17 million, and Iceland’s escalating whale hunts, are clear abuse of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) as well as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), to which Iceland is a signatory.
