Supermarkets in the United States emit large amounts of potent greenhouse gases known as HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons), which are widely used in commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning. A dozen of the largest and most important US supermarket chains and retailers were surveyed by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) to ascertain what policies and actions were being taken both to reduce the amount of HFC emissions leaking from refrigeration units and what measures were underway to begin phasing out the use of HFCs.
